To mark the release of 2,600 images from Bard Graduate Center Gallery in the Artstor Digital Library, Bard’s curatorial team discusses the institute’s history and the importance of its Gallery exhibitions for expanding conventional notions of the art historical canon.

Bard Graduate Center Gallery is recognized nationally and internationally for groundbreaking exhibitions that highlight new scholarship in the fields of decorative arts, design history, and material culture. These feature rarely seen objects, drawings – including architectural renderings – and other exceptional works of art. Our research-driven interpretation materials provide visitors with in-depth labels and contextual photographs, and we translate curatorial thinking into display strategies that incorporate new media and film. As a non-collecting institution, our exhibitions are loan-based, drawing on a range of public and private collections around the world, and are celebrated for introducing the public to work that has never before been on view, or that is seldom exhibited in New York for reasons of rarity, accessibility, or condition. Located on West 86th Street on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the Gallery occupies three stories of a landmarked townhouse, creating an intimate environment for engaging with stimulating ideas and objects, from the simplest artifacts of everyday life to the most extraordinary and exquisite artistic creations.

Take a deep breath, the presidential debates are finally over. But brace yourselves, we still have a couple of weeks of campaigning left until the actual elections. Why the negative tone? Well, the Washington Post reported that “59 percent of Americans are sick and tired of the election”–and that was way back in July! And we’re not just sick and tired, we’re also stressed: in a more recent poll by the American Psychological Association, 52 percent of American adults said the upcoming election is a significant source of stress.

Can we interest you in a tour of more innocent days from Cornell University’s Political Americana Collection in Shared Shelf Commons? Days in which campaigns featured such lighthearted items as songs like “Grant is the Man,” promoting Ulysses S. Grant, or “Let’s O-K, I-K-E,” about Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower.

Sculptor Benvenuto Cellini is best remembered for two things: his bombastic autobiography, the Vita, in which he confesses to multiple murders and a spectacular jailbreak, and for his salt cellar. Yes, that’s right—a dish for salt.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is pleased to collaborate with Artstor to make available approximately 1,000 images of works from the Foundation’s collections in its Digital Library. Spanning the breadth and depth of the collections, works from all aspects of the collections including paintings, drawings, maps, prints, textiles, ceramics, glass, metals, furniture, numismatics, and mechanical arts and arms will be shown, effective May 15, 2016.

Through a collaboration with the Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN) and Art Resource, Artstor is now sharing more than 5,100 additional images of works in the permanent collections of French national and regional museums in the Digital Library.

This brings the total of RMN images in the Digital Library to more than 12,000. The images come from the archives of the Agence photographique de la RMN, which encompass the collections of 28 museums such as the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, and the Musée National d’Art Moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou.

This release is composed of an outstanding selection of modern art, including paintings by Balthus, Francis Bacon, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Natalia Goncharova, Marc Chagall, Tamara de Lempicka, Fernand Léger, André Masson, René Magritte, and Francis Picabia; sculptures by Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, André Derain, Jean Dubuffet, Niki de Saint-Phalle, and Joseph Beuys; works on paper by Pierre Alechinsky, Antonin Artaud, Edgar Degas, Paul Klee, and Victor Hugo; installations by Louise Bourgeois and Martial Raysse; rarely-seen reconstructions of architectural models by Kazimir Malevich, furniture designed by Le Corbusier, and documentary and self-portrait photographs by Constantin Brancusi; as well as more than 100 works by Vassily Kandinsky. The release also features thousands of ancient to medieval artworks from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

liu_postArtstor Digital Library and the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library at Long Island University are collaborating to share approximately 2,000 images of items in the William Randolph Hearst Archive.

William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951) is best known today for his successful publishing and media dynasty, but he was also passionate about works of fine art and antiques and collected objects for more than seven decades. Mary Levkoff, Museum Director, Hearst Castle ®, described Hearst as a collector with a need for quality and a desire for quantity. “He loved to collect objects used to furnish his six main residences; filling them with art was his joy.”
